Scapa Flow Week 2009

Located north of John’0’Groats, the Orkney Islands and the natural harbour of Scapa Flow have been used for hundreds of years by the British Navy.

The Flow contains some of the most famous Shipwrecks in British Naval history; the Royal Oak and HMS Hampshire.

The final resting place of the WW1 German High Seas Fleet, scuttled 3 days before Armistice Day in 1919, the Flow has become a Mecca for wreck divers all over the globe.

Although many of the battleships were eventually raised, eight still remain and make fantastic and challenging dives.

The trip will take place from the 18th to the 26th of September 2009.

Accommodation will be upon the MV Sunrise, a boat we have used on quite a few occasions; the use of a live-aboard allows us far greater freedom than staying in a B&B on shore.  This does not mean that you will be stuck on the boat out in the flow at night – the boat moors in harbour, usually in Stromness, every evening after diving.

It does, however, mean that we can travel to other harbours which may be nearer to the following days planned dive site should this make diving easier.

Although morning dives will generally be conducted mainly on the German Fleet there are a host of other wrecks in and around the flow, many of them making fantastic afternoon dives in shallower water (usually less than 20m).

These include the blockships in Burra Sound, sunk to stop U-boats entering the Flow, in many people’s opinion these wrecks are some of the best dives in the UK.

The F2 is a popular second dive, resting in only 18m of water this experimental torpedo recovery boat is a similar size and layout to a destroyer.

Finally a drift down Gutter Sound is always a good rummage dive and excellent for scallops, we always try to get a few bags towards the end of the week to accompany a chilli or curry.

Stromness is a quiet fishing town with several very good pubs and restaurants to cater for all tastes.

There are also a couple of good cafes, a dive shop, and a variety of interesting stores all within a couple of hundred yards of the boat’s mooring.

There is a supermarket a few hundred yards further out of town.

An optional full English breakfast will be provided on the boat each morning, after the first dive, though you will need to provide lunch and your evening meal which will usually be in one of the local pubs.

There is a full galley on board for those who may wish to eat on board in the evening, we usually do this on several evenings, as well as facilities to make tea, coffee, etc.

The total trip cost is £379 including the week's diving, onboard accommodation and ferry transfer to stromness from mainland Scotland.

Bed & Breakfast Accommodation in Thurso is also included on the evening of the 18th, before the ferry trip the next morning.  This will be deducted from the trip cost for those wishing to drive straight to the ferry port.

Air fills are also included.  Nitrox is also available on the boat and is very reasonably priced.

A deposit of £150 secures your space.  These will fill rapidly so don't delay.

Due to the depths involved all divers must have a minimum qualification of PADI Advanced Open Water Diver with Deep Diver Specialty / BS-AC Sports Diver or equivalent.

We recommend a minimum of 50 dives experience, including UK diving.

The use of enriched air nitrox will greatly increase your available bottom time and is therefore highly recommended.
